Monica was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 11 during a time of family turmoil, while her parents were divorcing. She faced rejection and bullying from her friends and classmates after returning to school from her 2-week medical absence. Not wanting to appear different, she neglected proper maintenance of her diabetes, and complications resulted in near death and eventual blindness at the age of 29. After 5 years of being cared for by her mother and stepfather, while deep in depression, she was doing nothing but lying-in bed listening to the radio or television. It was a very dark time, and she thought her life was over. Then she had a defining moment! Monica did not understand at that time that God was showing her this was just the beginning. Her transformation progressed over the years from being an invalid physically, visually and emotionally to achieving numerous personal victories. Not only did she relearn daily living skills, but she also regained her security, confidence and independence. With the help of Aurora of Central New York and Arise of Oswego County, Monica was able to move into her own home.
